Wall plugs (anchors) may be a term that some people have heard of, while others may not be familiar with it at all. For those who don’t know, a wall plug is a component used in construction work. It’s an essential tool for many tasks because of its properties, which make construction work easier and extend the possibilities of what can be done.
A wall plug (anchor) is a type of material or tool used to help secure screws or bolts into walls, ceilings, or floors that have low flexibility and where screw threads have difficulty gripping, such as concrete floors, gypsum ceilings, or plywood walls. Wall plugs are also easy to install. After drilling a hole, simply hammer or press the wall plug into place, and then you can install the screw or bolt immediately. Although the installation is simple, one important thing is selecting the right wall plug for the type of job and material
The main types of wall plugs (anchors) are categorized based on how they will be installed, such as installation in floors, walls, or ceilings. Some people also categorize them by material, like wall plugs for lightweight concrete, concrete, gypsum, or plywood. Therefore, understanding the different types of wall plugs allows us to properly distinguish between them.
For regular concrete walls that do not need to support excessive weight.
For regular concrete walls, but made from nylon material that is tougher and stronger, supporting more weight than plastic wall plugs
Metal wall plugs for concrete walls can support weight but must be used indoors, as the metal material may rust and deteriorate over time.
Wall plugs specifically designed for use with lightweight concrete blocks. Made of metal, they have a thread design that can support weight and are suitable for the porous nature of lightweight concrete.
Wall plugs in the form of glass tubes containing chemical adhesive inside, which acts like a strong, fast-drying glue. They are used by inserting the chemical wall plug and then driving in the screw to break the tube. These plugs are highly durable and can support a lot of weight, but they are very expensive.
Lead wall plugs are resistant to rust and can be used for concrete wall applications similar to metal plugs, but they can also be used outdoors.
Wall plugs specially produced for use with wooden or gypsum board ceilings, which are in sheet form. Therefore, they need to be used to increase the grip area for better weight support
These wall plugs are similar to those used for gypsum work, but when installed, the wings spread out, allowing for installation without damaging the ceiling or wall. This enables installation with lightweight materials. However, it is important to calculate the weight capacity of the wall and ceiling materials as well.
After we install the wall plug, if we observe closely, we can see small teeth on the sides of the plug. When we screw it in, the plug expands until it tightly fits against the surface of the material and secures itself. However, for plugs designed for wood or gypsum work, the plug will separate into spikes to increase the grip area for materials similar to board wood.
