One common issue for homeowners is mold on concrete walls. If it’s not taken care of, it can lead to deterioration and damage to your home and may also cause serious illnesses, such as Aspergillosis. Furthermore, if left untreated without initial maintenance, the damage may worsen to the point where it can’t be fixed on your own, requiring a professional to resolve the issue, which will lead to additional expenses.
Primarily, it is mostly caused by moisture
If house walls are exposed to leaking water pipes for an extended period, moisture can seep into the concrete walls, leading to mold and algae stains
When it rains, concrete walls absorb moisture from the rain. Even after the rain stops, this moisture doesn’t evaporate immediately, making it easy for mold to grow
Due to poor air circulation around the concrete walls and lack of sunlight exposure, making it easier for mold to grow
Before starting to remove mold, you need to wear gloves, glasses, and a mask for protection from chemicals or dust that may be exposed to your skin. Additionally, it helps prevent contact with the mold that is about to be removed from the concrete walls
Clean the concrete walls with a mold remover mixed with water in a 1:3 ratio or as per the product label. Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the mold stains on the concrete walls. If the mold stains are stubborn, leave the solution on the wall for at least 10-15 minutes
Use a cloth or sponge to clean off the mold stains and the solution left on the concrete walls with clean water. Then, allow the walls to dry completely for at least 24 hours to ensure all moisture from the cleaning process evaporates
Use a crack filler suitable for the type of crack. Clean the crack with a brush and use a heat blower to dry it before sealing. This helps prevent moisture buildup later on
Once the walls are completely dry for at least 24 hours, apply a mold-resistant solution on the wall surface. Let it dry for at least 3 hours without rinsing
To improve the appearance of the concrete walls, apply a primer and a topcoat. Choose a formula that allows moisture to evaporate well and prevents mold and efflorescence stains. (For detailed instructions on painting, see here)
